how the Tokyo train works
I saw this commercial for HowStuffWorks.com last night and had to rewind and watch it again (thanks Tivo!) because I find it hilarious.
Love that the people are lined up in a column to get on the train. Love that no one is able to get off of the train before the people start cramming on. Love that the people have to be vigorously shoved onto the train. Love that there are train conductors--with white gloves--on the platform specifically to help cram people on the train. LOVE that they have to squeeze every. last. finger. in. before the doors close. Love it.
Thank goodness the DC metro is not that crowded. (Although some days it feels like I'm that person with her face squished up against the door).

Beethoven's 6th
Call me a nerd, but I enjoy listening to classical music, especially if I have it playing softly when I go to sleep at night. My favorite classical piece is Beethoven's 6th Symphony, also known as the Pastoral symphony. It's light and airy and quite lovely.
After revisiting all those old Disney cartoons on Youtube last week, I remembered the animated short from Disney's Fantasia that features Beethoven's 6th. Fantasia (1940) always seemed like the "boring" Disney movie, but this segment about the creatures of Greek mythology playing and enjoying a lovely pastoral day was always one of my favorites. I think it's pretty amazing how the creative team at Disney coordinated the animated story to perfectly coincide with Beethoven's music...it's almost as if the music was written specially for the cartoon.

Francine Rivers
She's only written the best, most wonderful, inspiring, beautiful, and enthralling books I've ever read. Ever. I can easily say that Francine Rivers is my favorite author. Her books are amazing, especially her Mark of the Lion series and Redeeming Love. I could read them over and over again. They could arguably be life-changing. (yes, I tell you, they are THAT good).
When I read An Echo in the Darkness, the second book of this series, I sat on my bed and read for 4 straight hours to finish the book--I literally couldn't put it down. It brought tears to my eyes. (And I am definitely not one to cry when reading).
I've read almost all her titles, and even though I'm a fan of some far more so than others, each one draws me in and keeps me reading fervently. If you are looking for a good read, I'd urge you to pick up Redeeming Love or A Voice in the Wind (the first book in the Mark of the Lion triology).
Francine is an award-winning author, who has won the Rita Award, the Christy Award, the ECPA Gold Medallion, and the Holt Medallion in Honor of Outstanding Literary Talent. She's also a member of the Romance Writers’ of America Hall of Fame. Her work has been published in over twenty different languages and she holds best-seller status all over the world.
If that isn't enough proof that she's a good author, just give one of her books a chance and you'll be convinced!

Elie Saab
Elie Saab is by far my favorite designer. His clothes showcase beautiful silhouettes, fabrics and colors. His gowns are sexy and fresh yet classic and his styling is always simple, accentuating the natural beauty of women.

new shoes!
Just bought these last weekend:
I've been looking for just the right pair of heels to wear with a certain yellow dress and these are the perfect match. They are wild and I love them. So much so, that I bought a second pair in hot pink!

Disney flashbacks
I'm back from a relaxing, refreshing, short vacation at the beach. Some of the family is still breaking in the new beach condo, but I'm back at work playing catch up...
Don't you just love random bits of nostalgia? I was on YouTube the other day and somehow came across a blast from the past: the Silly Symphony cartoons from Disney. When I was a little kid, we had a whole tape of recorded cartoons from the Disney channel that I remember watching all the time. This one of Little Hiawatha really took me back.
I had totally forgotten about these, but seeing them on Youtube again reminded me of how much I loved these short Disney cartoons as a kid. They are classic and I think they are so much better than the crazy cartoons out today.

Independence day
Happy 4th of July!
July 4th is my favorite holiday. I don't know if its because its so close to my birthday and that week is always a celebratory one; or if growing up with my dad in the Army made me more appreciative of all things patriotic--either way, I've always loved July 4th!
Summer. Cookouts. Fireworks. Sparklers. Parades. Picnics. Pools.
Pride. Honor. Glory. Freedom.
